De-territorialization of Asia: The Question After the End of Questions Kailin Yang
With Asia’s rapidly transformation and changing from the global politico-economic matrix, “Asia,” in the future, can never become a necessary watchword for questions and methods. In other words, the question for Asia can no longer be Kantian categorical imperative. This is not a forgetting of histories nor spatial locality, but rather a shifting of the question. Perhaps, there can be an appropriation of what has been defined as Asia from the global displacement, conversion, and integration? Furthermore, can contemporary art can marking the de-territorialization of Asia which reflects the premonition of the future?
Viénet（魏延年）went to China in 1964. Back in France he became very prolific scholar, organized a Chinese Department at Paris University, was employed by the French National Centre for Scientific Research, and between 1971 and 1978was the editor of a prestigious series « Bibliothèque asiatique » which published Li YiZhe, Wei Jing Sheng and his best-seller the books by Simon Leys, and many translations from the Chinese. Viénet was then,in France, one of the earliest and the most effective and known critic of MsMao (Jiang Qing), Lin Biao, etc. He was kicked out off the university twice — once for being labelled a friend of Deng XiaoPing… (French sinologists at that time were a bunch of crazy maoist fools …). The same French sinologists also dismissed his proposal to work on a software to use the usual latin 26 letters keyboard to input Chinese characters ! They wrote to the Ministry of Education that Chinese characters would never be used in computers, and that Viénet was dangerous anarchist …
He interviewed CCK the day of Xmas 1978, when Washington shifted embassy to BeiJing, established the French cultural centre in Taipei, a swift trampoline to become in Year 1980 the Representative of French nuclear industry in Taipei (more precisely the French Nuclear Fuel Company). He then initiated and negotiated a 20 years+ contract which supplied to Taiwan nuclear 6 reactors 30% of their enriched uranium needs. In Years 1993-97, he propose to take to France all Taiwan nuclear spent fuel, with nothing returned to Taiwan. The scheme failed not because of BeiJing, not because of Taipei, but because of some stupid French people. So Viénet gave-up nuclear industry, and he restarted some publishing activities.

The concept was to critique the spectacle through its own very mean, and therefore performed a radical critique of capitalistic cultural hegemony with referencing the exegesis of May 1968, Bakunin, Marx, Paris Commune, and French Communist party. The détourned film soon became a classics in cult films, and influenced much later the anti-globalization tactic of culture jamming.
